[comp.lang.modula2] Modula-2 compiler wanted for Ultrix

russ@silver.bacs.indiana.edu (Jeff Russ) (12/16/88)

I'm trying to find a Modula-2 compiler that will run under DEC's Ultrix
operating system. The compiler will be used for an introductory
programming class. From what I hear, the Modula-2 compiler that comes
bundled (unsupported) with Ultrix is not very good. If anyone knows of
a good compiler please let me know.

The compiler that you get with Ultrix was written by Mike Powell, then of
DEC's Western Research Laboratory. This compiler is a lot better than no
compiler at all :-), and has some nifty register allocation hackery that
was interesting enough to get a mention in the updated Aho-Sethi-Ullman
"dragon" book.

Though Powell isn't here anymore, WRL has continued to work on the
compiler. Phobias about paperwork have kept the latest versions of the
compiler from appearing in the Ultrix release, but any university or
non-profit can get the version of their choice directly from WRL, paying
only media costs.
