[comp.lang.modula2] modula-2 for mac

MAT510@DE0HRZ1A.BITNET (Thomas Kaule) (02/23/89)

Can anyone name me a "good" modula-2 compiler for the MacIntosh II ?
We need it for the teaching of beginner-students in computer-science-
courses.

Thanks, Th. Kaule

I will give you the names of two excellent Modula-2 compilers for the Mac:

1) MetCom Modula-2, Metropolis Computing, Montreal PQ (and Mooers, NY)
Fairly new, self-contained with integrated source-level debugger.
Compiler generates reasonable code, creates only applications for
export out of the environment -- can run anything within their
environment. Editor is solid and Macish, but does not have very
many bells and whistles -- no regular expression searching, no
macros, no markers, limited keyboard interface for positioning in
file. Works adequately in a MacPlus with two 800K floppies.
Metropolis has licensing programs for academia.

2) SemperSoft Modula-2, Semper Software, Glen Ellyn, IL
Runs under MPW. Much better for creating Mac applications and
code modules, standard library support is good. Source-level
debugging is not currently available. Requires at least a MacPlus
with hard disk. MPW is a real memory and disk hog, as is typical
of top-of-the line systems for professional development.

For a classroom environment where the thrust is programming with Modula-2,
I would recommend MetCom as the best choice; however, if the thrust is
programming the Mac, then SemperSoft gets the nod.

I hope this has been of some help.
