This message is being posted to the FidoNet echo MODULA-2 and Usenet's comp.lang.modula2. At the recent US meeting, when folk heard that the FidoNet echo MODULA-2 was as if not more interesting as the Usenet newsgroup comp.lang.modula2 (aka the Internet list INFO-MODULA2), they asked if I could link the two groups, which I can easily do. So, this is a trial balloon. Would anyone object to me crosslinking the two groups? There are three things of note: o There has been some non-Modula pollution of comp.lang.modula2. Unlike Usenet which is commercially supported, FidoNet is paid for out of the pockets of individual people. They will greatly resent discussions of Ada, C, or other extraneous matter. Are the the c.l.m2 folk willing to show a bit more restraint? o We gaters between FidoNet and Usenet have refrained from globally crosslinking on the theory "why should FidoNet pay to move newsgroup X to Portland, when Usenet already does." There is also the fear of multi-net 'dupe loops'. This rule of thumb has been violated when either the echo or the newsgroup is not widely distributed. I think that this exception is a fair one in this case. o The two cultures are slightly different. While a fair number of us eggheads participate in both nets, the FidoNetters tend to discuss day-to-day issues a bit more than the c.l.m2 folk, who mainly seem to exchange addresses of vendors and flame C :-). So, I prose a one week discussion period (netmail preferred, please), and then I will report the results back to the two groups, and proceed from there. We now return you to discussion of Modula-2. -- ..!{uunet,qiclab,intelhf}!m2xenix!randy randy@psg.com randy@m2xenix.uucp
