[comp.lang.modula2] Repertoire

roseman@cpsc.UCalgary.CA (09/29/89)

I was curious to know if anyone was aware of when an update to PMI's
Repertoire toolkit for MSDOS M2 compilers was going to be released.
I've got 1.5(e) [I believe] and did send in the card for updates.

On a similar line, I was wondering if there was some kind of source for
changes to Repertoire. A lot of the modifications I find myself doing
have no doubt been duplicated by other people, and I hate reinventing
the wheel. If such a source of changes doesn't exist, is there any
demand for such a source to be created?

I suggest you contact Mr. Jim Bones ["general manager" of PMI]. He IS
interested in improvements to PMI's software--especially bug fixes.
You can call him during business hours at 503-236-1788.

Hi Domi

I think the offer on the last page of your user's manual is only a demo
version (perhaps only the definition modules). my friend Ralph has to work
with it and he says that Repertoire is no good for your health. To
monstreous. This is for sure without warranty.

See ya.

Bernd

I also got the same offer on Repertoire and did send in the coupon.
I got some disks with the definition modules and object code for the
implementation modules. You also get a manual on disk. If you buy the
library you will get a printed manual and the source code for the modules.
The demo version is fully usable but you have no right to distribute
programs that uses Repertoire modules without paying for it. It does
not cost over $600, I think it is 100 - 150.

I have not used Repertoire much and have not bought it. To me it seemed
to be rather labourious to learn the library good enough to know when
to pick routines from it. The few tests a made also indicated that
it makes the programs rather slow and large comparred to write customized
procedures. Maybe you will get an better impression and overview of
the library with a printed manual. If you need some of the modules
in the library it could be an good idea to use if for faster program
development if speed and codesize not is critical (usually it is not).
Probably you will have better use of the libray with source code you
can modify. Maybe I will look at the modules one times more and perhaps
send after the library. However, the best way to get an impression
of it is to send after the demo and look if it is something you need.

Re: Repertoire

I have made use of the offer and ordered the library. For the price of
postage you get the definition modules and the object code for the modules.
You also get the documentation on disk in the form of archived files. If you
want the source code that will cost you an additional $185. The fee of $689
is for the right to distribute the object library as part of your own
library.

I have used the library and have found that it is bug free. In two years of
use I have not found a single bug. The worst part of the the library is the
documentation. It is rather terse. Even so, there is 460 pages of it. To
explore this library fully will require a few years of constant use. My only
negative comment is on the way that the library is structured. In order to
make the source code independant of the compiler, a lot of functions provided
by the JPI Library is implemented again in a couple of low-level modules.
This needlessly adds to the size of the executable image. An example of this
is the fact that SET OF CHAR is implemented in a module somewhere even though
it is directly available in the compiler. It is well worth the $9 for
postage that they charge for the objects.

Don't ever buy a library from Software Artistry because the M2 libraries are
junk. Even the demo programs don't work properly. I have reported many bugs
and have not received a single reply or correction.
