I have just started to read the articles about M2 as a first langauge
after a couple of months off from the machines, so sorry if this is a
bit late.

Here at Imperial College, in London, we used to use M2 as a first
language. The change from Pascal was made about 4 years ago (I think).
I was in the last year to do it, though (last year). The current first
years learn Miranda (functional programming language) as their first
langauge. They are still taught M2, during the second term.
