[comp.lang.modula2] JPI News 2/2

Kaare.Rasmussen@f15.n231.z2.fidonet.org (Kaare Rasmussen) (08/21/90)

...Continued...

All new features provided by V2 are not expected to be needed by
all users. V1.17 has been a successful product that provides all
the features that some people require. We especially expect V1.17 to
continue to be popular in the educational field where a small and easy
to use/learn system is required. V2 and following versions are the future
for those with increasing demands on compiling systems. The transition
between a "small" to a "large" system is liable to be somewhat painful
and we fully expect people to return systems (for full money back) because
they provide unwanted features (and hence consequent penalties). TANSTAAFL.

Lastly, I would like to list some of the things that we are doing to
rectify the faults listed above.

1) We have produced a bug-fix release 1.05. This addresses all the bugs
found in 1.04. This will begin to ship to existing users as soon as
possible. Priority shipping to Bixen users can be arranged by emailing
Don (dondumitru) in the US or myself (nigelh) for Europe. Otherwise
call either the US or UK offices. This version only contains bug-fixes
and no major new features, as we did not want to risk introducing new
bugs. It should prove to be much more stable than version 1.04.

2) We are currently working on a new major version of the TopSpeed system
for release at the start of next year. This will have a number of
significant new features and design improvements. The documentation
is currently being re-written, as I mentioned above, to go with this
   release.
Because we have admitted full responsibility for the initial problems
of the new version Modula-2, we plan to offer upgrades to this *major*
version at a nominal cost (to cover shipping and handling) together
with offer vouchers for other TopSpeed compilers. We feel this is the
least we can do for loyal users of TopSpeed M2 who have shown patience
while suffering the teething troubles of the new version.

3) We hope in the future to keep in close contact with the need of
our users. Version 2 does contain a large number of improvements
requested by users (perhaps some Bixen may recognize thier own
suggestions) and we hope to continue to gather input for
incorporation in subsequent releases (we will only attempt the
possible though :-). Suggestions can be emailed to myself (nigelh)
or Don (dondumitru) or mailed or faxed to our US or UK offices. Mark
all mail "Suggestions Box" for easy sorting. We will endevour to
   consider all suggestions carefully.

We hope that none of the above discourages anyone from using TopSpeed
languages. We will continue to improve the product in future and hope
you will take into account the difficulty of what we are attempting to
do when judging the initial releases of our products. After all, we
aim to please.
