[net.music] More MTV vs Falwell

I don't quite understand Mr. Switzer's position on the Falwell
vs MTV subject. Is he...

	(1) Glad that MTV is now selectable (ie - it is not part of the
"standard" cable service, and those homes that don't want
	    it don't get it)?

	*or*

	(2) Hoping that it will be eliminated totally?

I totally agree with (1). As a parent, he should have the
right to choose what enters his home (as reading or viewing material),
and what his children should be exposed to (when they are young).
I would expect that, as they get older (teens), he will allow them to make
some of their own decisions (give them responsability), but in essence
I agree.

I violently disagree with (2). You have the right to not patronize
forms/expressions of art with which you don't agree. You do not have
the right to prevent me from viewing the same. I *like* music videos
(though I do not have MTV [yet]).
I think that Falwell and all of the other religious "leaders"
in this country are fine... as long as they don't tell me what I can
do. What is there to religion if you're forced to comply and "be good"?
You can't *be* good unless you refuse a chance to "be bad."
Religion makes a big deal out of the fact that *each person* can choose
between right and wrong. (btw, I am a christian -- protestant).

One final note -- I wouldn't consider the battle over yet.
Does he know that all of the major networks have shows which include
music videos? That one of them is on Saturday morning? (Two of
them, actually: "American Top 40" followed by "Music Magazine").
There are at least TWO of the major networks which run video shows
in the late afternoon hours (4-6pm). Some of these, of course, may be
local to LA. Most of the other video music shows are late at night,
(after 11pm), when all young aspiring capitalists are safe in bed.
The only way to insure that your family is not exposed to
(1) mindless drivel, (2) sex, and (3) violence is to (A) throw away the
TV, (B) throw away the radio, and (C) never go see any movies.

The only network video programs that I know of are "Friday Night Videos"
and "ABC Rocks."

However, the rumour mill has it that there will be some Saturday Morning
network shows that show music videos. I guess the kids get to decide
anyway.
