[comp.lang.modula2] Modula-2 Standards Committee Meeting

reid@CTC.CONTEL.COM (Tom Reid x4505) (05/29/91)

Included is a copy of the invitation/information letter just sent for this
year's Modula-2 standards committee meeting in June. This formulates the
USA position for the ISO sc22wg13 Modula-2 standards meeting in Tubingen
in July. We will be reviewing and commenting on the draft standard produced
by the British. This may be the last open commenting period before the
vote to accept or reject the standard.

All are welcome to come but, as warning, the time for introduction of new
proposals has past. It is close to accept or reject time. To get anything
out of the meeting, you need a copy of the draft standard, all 750 pages
of it. I am not trying to scare anyone off since all are welcome, but
the meeting may prove a bore to those who are not familar with the
British document and how it got that way.

Please call or write me if there are any questions.

Tom.

Modulandians:

The next meeting of the US Modula-2 Standards Committee (IEEE/MSC/P1151 and US
TAG) will be held Sunday/Monday, June 16/17, 1991 at the Comfort Inn in
Chantilly, Virginia with lodging reserved. There will also be an informal
meeting Saturday night beginning at 6:00 PM at a place to be determined. We are
sorry about the late notice but the draft standard to review has been very late
in arriving. If we can or have to, we may move the meeting sessions to the
Contel Technology Center in Chantilly. This may not be possible as my last day
of work is Tuesday, June 18.

The Draft Standard The new draft standard has just arrived in the US in TEX
electronic format. I will get copies to those who are either 1) coming to the
meeting or 2) will make comments on it for the US delegation. I am not in a
position to make paper copies for general distribution. If you can ftp and
print TEX documents, it can be ftp-ed from my machine. If not, please call me
or send me mail and I will fed-ex it to you (the Contel Technology Center's
going-away present).

The files are being transferred to an anonymous login account on my machine for
those of you with internet access. My machine's name is absurd.ctc.contel.com
(aka 131.131.11.113). There are two files, iso.sty.Z and m2.d4.Z, in the ftp
unix directory /pub/p1151. The files are in compressed tar format for those who
can print TEX files. The following is a sample ftp session to get the two files:

  >ftp 131.131.11.113 -- you type
  Connected to absurd.ctc.contel.com.
220 absurd FTP server (SunOS 4.1) ready.

ftp> bye -- terminate transfer session

The area (see next page for a map): The meeting will be about 30 miles West of
Washington, DC in the Virginia suburbs. The Comfort Inn and Contel are on the
same side of US-50 off Route 28 (Sully Rd.) about 5 miles apart. The Comfort
Inn is about 1 mile West of Route 28 on the left.

Meeting: The meeting is presently scheduled for the executive conference room
of the Comfort Inn. The meetings will be from 8:00 to 5:00 each day with a
probable evening session Sunday night and an informal session Saturday night. I
will make arrangements for lunch. For the room, lunches and cokes (coffee and
continental breakfasts are free), I anticipate about a $30-35 meeting charge
depending on the number of people. Please let me know what days you will be
here so I can plan (thanks).

Lodging: A block of rooms is being held at the Comfort Inn at 4050 Westfax Dr.
(at US-50) in Chantilly, VA for the nights of June 15/16 at a rate of $39.00
plus 6 1/2% tax. It has an exercise room, heated pool and sauna/whirlpool. To
take advantage of this rate, you must make the reservations before June 11.
Call the Comfort Inn directly at (703)818-8200 or 1-800-325-7760. You must say
you are with the Modula-2 group to get the discount. The rooms will be
guaranteed to your credit card. To save yourself money, please cancel before
6:00 PM if you cannot make it.

Travel: I strongly suggest Dulles Airport. The Comfort Inn is about 10 miles
South of Dulles, 30 miles from National, and 70 miles from Baltimore-Washington
International. The Comfort Inn has a courtesy car from Dulles. When you know
your arrival time, please let me know so I can try to coordinate getting you to
the Comfort Inn, dinner for early arrivals, and to and from the meetings.
People who have rental cars will win the admiration of others.

Please, Please - Call me with questions. Please let me know if and when you
are coming so I can plan.

Sincerely,

Thomas F. Reid (Tom)
