Concerning the discussion on GPM. GPM is a commercially available M2 compiler available for various Unix platforms. For educational institutes that use GPM there will soon be a MS-DOS version available for distribution to students. The MS-DOS version will not be optimized, but its code will compile on any Unix GPM compiler. GPM has had extensive work done on compile time error messages, and on optimization. GPM reports some of the best compile time error messages that I have seen. The optimization is done on the M2 code, before translation to C. In informal tests here at QUT our M2 code usually runs faster than optimized C code written with all of the common optimization tricks. Work is also being done on writing native code compilers for the MIPS architecture. The contact for information of getting GPM commercially has been previously posted to this news.group.
