I saw a portion of a CNN report today which mentioned that MTV is now an extra-cost service [somewhere in Virginia, everywhere in Virgina] (Pick one) as a result of pressure from JF & Co., due to the sexual/violence content of some of the videos...can anyone who is closer to the scene enlighten us on this? -- ---Rsk UUCP: { decvax, icalqa, ihnp4, inuxc, sequent, uiucdcs } !pur-ee!rsk { decwrl, hplabs, icase, psuvax1, siemens, ucbvax } !purdue!rsk I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints, The sinners are much more fun...and only the good die young!

I know I'm opening up a can of worms here, but, without getting (or knowing about) into the connection with Jerry Falwell, I think that doing that is a good idea. I have kids at home (5, 2, and 1/2 yrs.) and my 5 year old has enough night mares without being shocked out of her skin by some of the videos that are on. Bob Switzer

Tell them not to. The whole reason we're going to lose all our individual freedoms in this country is because people don't want to take care of their children, so they let the government and other groups do it for them. { Video Killed the radio star... } MTV edits the videos very well and will not play the really nasty ones. They editted David Bowie's bottom out of "China Girl" and I have never seen any really savagely violent videos on MTV. One of the cable networks has a video show where they proclaim that they show uneditted videos. It's one of those mostly-movie networks like HBO or showtime, which means even if you can't get MTV, you can still get videos and these are the ones that you get to see. As much as I tend to dislike MTV, especially since they sleazed this "exclusivity agreement" with a few of the record companies, I have to give them snaps for their consistant use of good taste; they know who their audience is and they know how to reach them. -- "Shit, I gotta have her." -- ZZ Top Peter Merchant

MTV doesn't cause nightmares, people cause nightmares. MTV doesn't cause anything, MTV is an anti-influence. MTV doesn't suck the creativity out of your mind, it prevents it from getting there in the first place. "She's got legs......she knows how to use use them....." I'm thirty, and I think Jerry Falwell is a FUCK of a lot more nightmare inducing than any of the mediocre, unimaginative, boring trash I've seen on MTV. If you don't want your kids to watch it, turn it off or put them to bed.

<> (in reference to watching Videos) "So tell your kids not to watch them" I just wish I had a channel lock-out so I could INSURE that my kids won't watch them! I DO TELL MY KIDS NOT TO WATCH THEM! And, thank God, they seem to be obeying me in that I never catch them with it on, and they never express a desire to watch them, no matter what channel they (the videos) are on.

Many cable companies can lock out stations you want during certain hours for a "nominal fee". If yours doesn't call them up and request that they start. I've even seen mechanical devices which fit over the tv's knobs to lock out stations. If none of those are appealing, then unsubscribe from the cable company. -- ...ihnp4!tellab1!steve Steve Harpster Tellabs, Inc.

You're right, you probably did open up a can of worms... but I've heard this said before (that MTV has so much sex and violence). I think people who say this must be afraid of rock&roll or something, because think of all the sex and violence on prime-time TV. I wonder, does your kid ever watch Mr. T? Why doesn't he have nightmares about him? I'm not personally turned on by alot of violence, but if it's going to be there, I'd rather there be some music to accompany it.
