Thanks to all the people who have been trying to help me, but you are overlooking a few things. 1) I am using turbo files of record, therefore DOS calls to open the file are requiring to much overhead in a program already bursting at the seems. 2) Turbo Pascal has some sort of buffer that keeps the status of an open file, or something that says a certain file is closed. This does exist. 3) Closing a file that was opened by Turbo Pascal, with a Dos routine will not work because it does not effect the object mentioned in two, even if DOS is certain that it has enough file handles. Therefore, no one has come up with it yet. If someone out there knows where this information is stored in memory, I would appreciate knowing about it. I may just end up waiting for version 4 of Turbo Pascal if I can't solve this in 3 (its only a month or two anyway) and hope that it is a bit more flexible in this respect.
