[net.sf-lovers] Chalker's Well World...

KIESCHE@RU-BLUE.ARPA (02/09/84)

The hexes on Chalker's Well World are named after several things--friends,
fans, places, made-up names, and (surprise!) ferry boats and National Parks!
Chalker is a big ferry boat fan, and was even married on one.

I just picked up "River of the Dancing Gods"--has anyone read it yet? It
looks like a trilogy, at least....

He is also coming out with another tetralogy, something along the lines of
"Shadows of Light and Flux"....the first book will be out in March from
Tor Books...

Flame: I have generally enjoyed Chalker--the first time through...I found
the first book of the Well World series good, but the quality went down from
there until the last book ("Twilight at the Well of Souls: The Legacy of
Nathan Brazil"), where it was so hack that I read it just to get through with
it.

A few of his books are definite favorites--"The Web of the Chozen", which I
always thought begged for a sequel & "The Devil Will Drag You Under"--which
contains a truely interesting and fairly original plot device (anything more
would constitute a SPOILER).

>From memory, the books are:

The Well World Series:

Midnight at the Well of Souls
Quest for the Well of Souls (War of the Well, Part One)
Exiles at the Well of Souls (War of the Well, Part Two)
The Return of Nathan Brazil
Twilight at the Well of Souls: The Legacy of Nathan Brazil

The Four Lords of the Diamond--I can't remember the four titles, but
you will recognize them easily--the names of the four planets are Lilith,
Charon, Medusa, and Cerberus. Each title is something like "Planet Name:
Something, Something, Something". The title paintings are also fairly
identical--each contains a depiction of the main character in the background
and some action in the foreground...

The Jungle of Stars
The Web of the Chozen
Dancers in the Afterglow
And the Devil Will Drag You Under
War of Shadows
The Identity Matrix

NEW BOOKS:

River of the Dancing Gods
New series from Tor...

As for publishers--all of Chalker's books are from Ballantine/Del Rey (and
should be easy to find or order), except for War of Shadows, which is from
Ace; The Identity Matrix, which is from Timescape/Pocket; and the new series
from Tor...

Enjoy! As soon as I go home, I'll write down the exact titles of the Four
Lords series and send it in, asking the Moderator to append this message...
