I am trying to find a short sci-fi story I read some 10
years ago. It wasn't from a book. I think it might have been
copied out of a magazine. Any help with the title , source, or
where I might find it would be greatly appreciated.
Basically, it is a doomsday-survival story.
The cause of the story is that world wide pollution has
become so bad that it has become deadly. Some sort of a cloud of
very concentrated pollutants forms and begins to move across the
surface of the earth killing most everything in its path. The
only hope is that it will rain, thus washing enough of the stuff
to earth to stop the cloud, (I don't think it ever did).
I can vaguely remember two scenes from the story. One
involves a woman who is getting ready for work in the morning,
and suddenly notices that her synthetic nightgown is
disintegrating right off her. The second scene is about a man
(returning from the army?) who arrives home in his air
conditioned car. When he gets out, the pollution causes him to
start choking. He sticks two cigarette filters up his nose (not
intended to be funny) and goes into the house to find his whole
family dead among the welcome home party trimmings.
There were several other scenes in the story, but I can't
remember any of them.
Thanks in advance for any help.
