[comp.lang.pascal] PRINTER/PLOTTER BGI DRIVERS FOR TURBO C/PASCAL

J_SCHULL%HVRFORD.BITNET@cornellc.cit.cornell.edu (Jonathan Schull) (06/06/90)

I've been looking for something like this for some time, and
others on the net have too.

A favorable review of GRAF/DRIVE PLUS just showed up in Turbo
Users Group (TUG) newsletter, and since there's a 30 day return
policy, I just ordered a copy, and offerred to distribute their
PR material. Here it is.
Disclaimer: I haven't even tried it yet, and I have no
connection with them.

PRINTER/PLOTTER BGI DRIVERS FOR TURBO C/PASCAL

Oakton, VA -- Fleming Software today announced the
release of GRAF/DRIVE PLUS, a software product that will
allow Turbo C and Turbo Pascal graphics programs to produce
output on printers and plotters.

GRAF/DRIVE PLUS is unique in that it provides device
drivers for Borland's built-in graphics library instead of
implementing a separate set of graphics commands. This
approach ensures a high degree of compatibility with
existing screen graphics programs. Unlike many products
that provide graphics device independence, GRAF/DRIVE PLUS
is not permanently memory resident, and will be licensed to
developers without distribution royalties.

Turbo C and Turbo Pascal have a built-in graphics li-
brary of over 70 functions, and support a wide range of CRTs
via Borland Graphics Interface (BGI) drivers. GRAF/DRIVE
PLUS provides additional BGI-compatible drivers for Hewlett-
Packard LaserJet, Epson FX80, and Epson LQ1500 printers, as
well as HP7470A/7475A pen plotters. BGI compatability means
that a developer can often 'port' his/her Turbo screen
graphics program to a hard copy device by simply changing
the driver name reference.

GRAF/DRIVE PLUS has a list price of $149 for a Personal
Use License (without redistribution rights) and $299 for a
Developer's License. It requires Turbo C 2.0 or Turbo
Pascal 5.0/5.5 for the IBM-PC.

My question is, why doesn't Borland ship their products with more .BGI
drivers? They let other companies ride on their coattails by not giving
us the drivers. I heard that Quattro has drivers for most printers, but
the format is a little different than .BGI for the languages, so they
already have them written.
