I have received private and public replies to an article I wrote regarding the question of whether to upgrade earlier Turbo Debugger/Assembler packages to the new Debugger/Assembler/Profiler package now, or await the release of Turbo Pascal 6.0. I would like to make a few remarks on that matter here and restrict other discussion to email. The D/A package can be upgraded to the D/A/P package without interferring with upgrading of the Pascal package. A later upgrade of the Pascal package will be less expensive if it is not upgraded as the "Professional" package (comprising Pascal and D/A/P in one package). Thus, there is little likely monetary savings to be had by delaying the upgrade of the D/A/P. Upgrading the D/A/P now and the Pascal package separately later would not appear to jeopardize a future upgrade of the "Professional" package. I.e., if you purchased the D/A/P and the Pascal separately, you still own the "Professional" package just as if you had purchased it that way. At least, that's the way that Borland dealt with the upgrade to C++. I upgraded a TC 2.0 package and the D/A package to a C++ "Professional" package just as if I were upgrading from TC 2.0 "Professional". All Borland wanted was the serial number from the appropriate diskettes. Those who are programming Turbo Pascal strictly as a hobby are quite welcome to wait however long they wish for Pascal 6.0 to be released before they enjoy the benefits of the 2.0 debugger. Those who earn their living with these tools, as I do, would be well advised to obtain the available tools when they are available rather than awaiting the unknown release date of other tools.
