thanks to all who responded to my original query and special thanks to the Imperial Emperor (?) who allowed me to download a file public domain file called INFOP125.zip from his BBS. That program in that zip file is called INFOPLUS, and it does do everything I asked for, and more. It's written in Turbo Pascal and assembler, and source code is included. (The program fails to detect the BIOS on at least some CGA machines, but does do a good job on most of its functions.) Several people suggested that that file was on SIMTEL but I haven't confirmed that. I'm not confident that I can upload and send it over bitnet either, but I'll try if you can't get it elsewhere.
