[net.sf-lovers] Looking for a Analog story

ealee@ihu1g.UUCP (Liz Scheller-Lee) (03/13/84)

I'm looking for a story that appeared in Analog magazine between 1977 and
1980. I don't remember the title or the author, but the story line went
something like this:

A space ship leaves earth with scientist and their families to
explore a distant planet. Along the way various forms of games
are used to entertain people, but the favorite is "Dungeon and
Dragons". This is not the same "D and D" that we know now, but
a more refined version that has no DM and takes place entirely
in the heads of the players. Two of the players (who's characters
are not involved in the main game at that time) have their
characters have an affiar. The space ship eventually get to its
destination and drops off the two previously mentioned people
and two others (one which is a "D and D" player). The 3 "D and
D" players get in trouble while on the planet and rather than
(or because they can't) figure out how to save themselves, they
slip into their "D and D" characters. They eventually "kill"
their "D and D" characters and figure out how to get out of their
	troubles.

Thanks in advance!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The described story:

I believe this story is by Poul Anderson and is called "Saturn Game".
This was nominated for a Hugo (novella or novellette) but I have forgotten
if it won or not.

  I believe that was one by Poul Anderson called "The Saturn Game";
it appeared in the February '81 Analog. I think the game was simply
called 'psychodrama'.

Re: Saturn Game:

The story involving D & D aboard a spaceship, called Saturn Game,
by Poul Anderson, did indeed win the Hugo award; as a result
a more deserving story, "Emergence" by David Palmer, did not.
sigh.

You're thinking of "The Saturn Game" (by author unremembered, which
is criminal because it won the Hugo). However, it is either Vernor Vinge
or Poul Anderson, and as I recall Vinge wrote "True Names", it must
be Anderson.
