Damiano's Lute by R.A. MAcAvoy (Bantam $2.75) I knew it would take a whale of a book to shove 'Tea With the Black Dragon' out as my book of the year. Well, R.A. MacAvoy came close with 'Damiano', the story of an Italian witch and his fight against himself and evil. With the second book in the trilogy, 'Damiano's Lute', she has outdone herself again. This is a marvelous, wonderful book. Well done, well plotted, very human characters (even Raphael the angel and Satan are well rounded and human characters). The only possible negative to this book is that it should be read after Damiano for its full impact. Of course, Damiano should be a must read as well. It is hard to believe that the first three books published by this person are THIS good.... Let us hope it bodes well for the future! Run, don't walk, for this book. Steal if neccessary. -- From under the bar at Callahan's: Chuq Von Rospach {amd70,fortune,hplabs,menlo70}!nsc!chuqui (408) 733-2600 x242 A toast! To absent friends... {clink}

<> I agree, this is a good book! Get it if you can (get all of MacAvoy's book, the're all good) or even if you can't. I have a minor quibble with the endings, pity about Damiano and his dog. Can't wait for "Rapheal", the third book in the trilogy. Sy Ali (...!alberta!syali)

I also had a quibble with the ending of Damiano's lute, because I really wanted to see another book about him. This may be difficult, since he died (See, I told you it was a spoiler). It is, however, a very good sign of confidence and maturity in MacAvoy for her to realize that she has enough control of her material to kill off her central character in the middle of a series. Somehow, I know she'll pull it off with flair and make us (almost) forget the poor witch... Besides, after thinking about the two books I came to realize that Damiano did what I had expected him to do, and it fit right in with his character. chuq -- From under the bar at Callahan's: Chuq Von Rospach {amd70,fortune,hplabs,menlo70}!nsc!chuqui (408) 733-2600 x242 To work it out I let them in; All the good guys and the bad guys that I've been; All the devils that disturbed me, and the angels that defeated them somehow; Come together in me now.
