[comp.lang.pascal] Borland BBS

yimling@geography.leeds.ac.uk (Yim Ling Siu) (06/22/91)

Hi,
I noticed some time ago that Borland has an area on Compuserve. I
have no access to Compuserve, and I wonder what kind of information
can be found there, and if it is held anywhere else (e.g. at an
anonymous FTP site)... There never seems to be that much in the
Borland section of the Simtel archives...

Thanks,

Yim Ling Siu <yimling@geog.leeds.ac.uk>

There are files available on Compuserve, but they're mostly not that
interesting. The interesting ones usually show up on ftp sites, like Simtel
or garbo.uwasa.fi.

The main value of the forums on Compuserve is the messages. They're something
like this newsgroup, but with a much higher volume (a hundred or more messages
per day). Luckily there's software available to help you select only the topics
that interest you; it's much better than rn, for example. If you can find them,
there are some real gems available there: you'll generally get good answers
to hard problems from someone or other.

As to availability: I remember reading that Compuserve was setting up
a European connection. I wasn't particularly interested at the time so
I can't remember the details, but
it may exist by now, and may make it available in the UK at reasonable prices.

If I were you I'd write to them and ask:

Yes, I hope so. But I also hope that the kind users will note that
the interesting files do not appear out of thin air at these sites,
but are a result of users' efforts. So, if you have quality Turbo
Pascal (shareware or PD) material, please do like Duncan and a few
other valued uploaders, and upload to these sites for our common
benefit.
