Two reasons: one, the grain of the print is not "determined" by the
negative: there is image degradation due to grain at every stage,
regardless of the target format; finer grain/wider format reduces the
degradation.
Secondly: brighter, sharper projection: the larger the film area,
the more light you can jam through the print without toasting it.
