[sci.misc] Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise -- An Answer?

lip@amid..ARPA (Loren I. Petrich) (01/11/89)

In "Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise, and Other Imponderables", we see
one proposed hypothesis -- that clock hands move in the direction that they
do because that is the direction that the shadow of the pointer of a sundial
moves in the Northern Hemisphere (before people used clocks, they used
sundials). One may speculate that, if clocks had been invented in the Southern
Hemisphere, "clockwise" would be the opposite direction.
