In "Why Do Clocks Run Clockwise, and Other Imponderables", we see one proposed hypothesis -- that clock hands move in the direction that they do because that is the direction that the shadow of the pointer of a sundial moves in the Northern Hemisphere (before people used clocks, they used sundials).
