[net.music] Are any Dead songs really dead?

rcd@opus.UUCP (Dick Dunn) (09/05/84)

From time to time I've heard it said that there are some songs that the
Dead just don't play any more, as a matter of policy. However, I've
noticed that some of the very old songs seem to have come back to life.
"Dark Star" is back (but who knows how often we'll hear it). I read that
"Turn on Your Love Light" had come up a year or more ago.

Are there any songs that the Dead REALLY won't play any more? If so, why?

...I'm not cynical - just experienced.

I've heard Bobby W berate some yo-yo who kept calling for "The Golden Road".
Screaming Bobby the Pop Star (:-)) was a little short tempered that night,
but I can't blame him much in this case. In any event he said the band didn't
even know that song any more.

On t'other hand, it *is* one of the Dead's trademarks to surprise as well
as amaze.

"Turn On Your Lovelight" back? No kidding? It was retired on PigPen's
death, being so strongly identified with him and all. Land o' Goshen!
