FINAL CALL FOR PAPERS Workshop on Cellular Automata April 17-18, 1991 Centre for Scientific Computing Helsinki, Finland 1. BACKGROUND Cellular automata are spatially and temporally discrete dynamical systems consisting of identical cells arranged in a lattice. The cells assume one of a finite number of values and are updated according to a spatially homogeneous local rule. These systems exhibit the prototypes of interactive dynamics. Due to this rich spectrum of behavior they have applications in a number of areas of science and engineering. A workshop on cellular automata will be arranged at the Centre for Scientific Computing (CSC) in Helsinki, Finland, on April 17-18, 1991. Papers presenting new theoretical results, or experiences of using cellular automata as modeling tools, are sought. Point of view can be general mathematics (for example dynamical systems theory), computational science, physics, or other natural sciences. 2. SPEAKERS The main speakers are: Per Bak, Department of Physics, Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA "Self-Organized Criticality" Bruce M. Boghosian, Thinking Machines Corporation, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA "A Survey of Lattice Gas and Lattice Boltzmann Methods for Hydrodynamics" David Griffeath, University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA "Excitable Cellular Automata" Clifford Pickover, IBM T.J. Watson Research Center, USA "Visualization of Complex Phenomena" These presentations will be organized as two 45 minute sessions each. 3. SUBMISSIONS We are searching for short, 15-30 minute presentations. These can include video, slide or computer demonstrations. We try to include as many presentations as possible, but if this can't be arranged, some may be included as posters. The presentations should be aimed to people with general scientific background, and too much specialization should be avoided. 4. REGISTRATION The registrations and submissions should be sent to the following address: Paula Maki-Valkkila VTKK/TLP P.O. Box 40 SF-02101 Espoo Finland E-mail: maki@csc.fi. Phone: +358 0 457 2718. Telefax: +358 0 457 2302. The organizers can make hotel reservations for participants, when needed. The walking distance to hotel Dipoli is 10 minutes. The cost of a single room is approx. 450 FIM for one night (ca. 120 USD). Submissions should include the following information: Title of presentation Abstract (not much more than one page) Possible bibliography Duration of presentation (15-30 minutes) Special equipment needed (slide, video equipment etc.) The deadline for registration to the workshop is April 8, 1991. Abstracts of submitted papers must be received before March 1, 1991. Authors of submitted papers will be notified of acceptance or rejection. The proceedings of the workshop will be published in the CSC Report Series, and the deadline for the final papers will be announced later. 5. ORGANIZERS The organizing committee for the workshop consists of the following people: Prof. Risto Nieminen, CSC Dr. Kari Eloranta, Helsinki University of Technology Mr. Olli-Pekka Piirila, Helsinki University of Technology Dr. Jarkko Kari, University of Turku Mr. Esko Jarvinen, CSC Mr. Juha Haataja, CSC 6. ARRANGEMENTS There is no registration fee for academic participants; for others, the fee is $100. For additional information, contact Juha Haataja (jhaataja@finsun.csc.fi or JHAATAJA at FINFUN) at the Centre for Scientific Computing.
