From: Peter Reiher <reiher@UCLA-CS.ARPA> A while ago I posted a notice that Wolfgang Peterson (the German director of "Das Boot" and "The Neverending Story") had taken over as director of this film, but I didn't have any other information. The LA Times had an article about the film this Sunday. It is indeed adapted from the novella by Barry Longyear (spelling?). It stars Lou Gosset and Dennis Quaid. It was originally to be filmed in Iceland, but Peterson decided to film in Germany and one of the Canary Islands. The action takes place on an alien world, and Peterson was not satisfied with the way Iceland looked in the existing footage, which was scrapped. It's to be filmed in English, as, it turns out, was "The Neverending Story", although that too was shot in Germany and used a mostly German crew. (By the way, "The Neverending Story" apparently cost $26 million dollars to film, which makes it the most expensive German film ever. It's doing very well in Germany.) Peter Reiher
