I was talking to someone here at work about his metal detector the other day and was told he could tune it to look for specific metals. Could someone explain the mechanism used by metal detectors? Does it sense metals passively or does the detector first broadcast on a certain frequency(ies) and listen for a 'reply'? There are other questions which come to mind (why only metals, similarities with nuclear magnetic resonance imaging, etc), but perhaps the answers are obvious once the mechanics of the device are known, so I'll wait to ask them (if they still need asking).
