[sci.astro] Yale Star Chart Package: bugs and suggestions

chester@utx1.UUCP (Bernard Chester) (12/03/87)

It's good to see that the new (version 2) yale star chart package has
finally been posted to comp.sources. There are some excellent new
features, my favorites are the ability to predefine constellations
with the -c and -f options. I did encounter some small problems, and
I have some suggestions for the authors.

1) The Legend, which is produced inside of starchart.c, uses varying
text sizes, which causes characters to overlap. I found that the
problem is easily fixed by putting
	vecsize(10);
before every string output.

2) Certain of my 'favorite' star names don't seem to be in the database.
Examples are Alnitak and Saiph in Orion, and Alhena in Gemini.
Perhaps there is a way to get an update or diff for those of us less
geared to the Greek letter ids?

3) I have been experimenting with enlarging the area used by the
pic version, so as to get more on the screen. When I'm satisfied with
my adjustments, I'll share them with everyone.

This is still the most useful and enjoyable program that I've found on
the net in the past year. My children and I thank the developers for
their efforts.
