[sci.astro] Novice astronomy info

macy@fmsystm.UUCP (Macy Hallock) (11/04/89)

In the limited time I have been using usenet, I have seen little
on the topic. Perhaps it is a good time to bring it up.

I have a 14 year old son, who is very bright, who has expessed
a continuing interest in astronomy. He has done a few things on
his own...but needs a bit of help. He could also use some social
involvement (like all teenagers do).

I have tried to encourage him, but since I have never pursued this
particular advocation, he has already progressed beyond my level.
(Unix, microcomputers, and telephony give one limited insights)
I have taken him to planetariums and museums, but now he needs
some outside guidance from more knowledgable sources.

Are you aware of any any astronomy clubs/groups who he might be
able work with a novice his age? Any suggestions for other
activities in the Cleveland/Akron are are also solicited.
I would also like a few idea for longer trips as well, such
as to an observatory within a few hours drive.

Suggestions concerning books, video tapes and other sources that
might be available through our by request through our small town
library would be appreciated.

Feel free to pass on or post this message as you feel appropirate.

I'd appreciate e-mail, since I don't always have time to read this
group before it expires....but post it, too, if you think the info
may be of general interest. Thanks in advance for your help.
