[sci.astro] Familiar Stars

umhudso7@ccu.umanitoba.ca (Wayne Hudson) (01/02/90)

I'm looking for a program that will give me the declination (that's the angle
above the horizon, isn't it?) of familiar stars in the night sky. I'd like
to be able to give it a time, date, & latitude, and the program give me the
declination of the star/constellation. (ie I tell it Jan 1, 1990, 12:01 am,
and 50 deg. and the star, and it tells me it's altitude). Anything??

A program called STARVIEW sounds like what your are looking for. You can
look at any part of the sky at any time of the year. A real nice feature,
if you have a mouse, is using the pointer to pick a star and it gives all
the info about it in the lower right hand of the screen. It's the best
star gazer program I've run across.
You can find it on Simtel20 in the directory
   PD1:<MSDOS.EDUCATION>STARVIEW.ARC

Hope this helps.
