From: "David S. Cargo" <Cargo@HI-MULTICS.ARPA> Having recently seen ST III, I couldn't get a couple of ideas to go away and let me alone, so I thought I would pass them on. There are two people from out of the past who would make interesting, if temporary partners, with Kirk and company: Harry Mudd and Cyrano Jones. Mudd was always asking Kirk to be his partner, but Kirk was always too busy being a straight laced Federation Star ship captain. It is also about time for Jones to be done collecting all the tribbles (unless you count the Saturday morning animation in which case he lucked out already). If Kirk has to resort to some sneaky methods to accomplish something, I can't think of more interesting accomplices; why shouldn't there be a whole episode which is mostly comedy? The following may be considered a mild spoiler for ST III, but I expect this to be in the ST III edition anyway. Also, concerning the fate of Kirk and company, it may depend on how much Star Fleet Command is concerned with ends, as opposed to means (i.e. are they results oriented?). If Kirk hadn't done what he did, think about what would have happened. The fate of his son would have been worse, the fate of the Enterprise would have been worse (in my opinion), the Klingons would have gotten what they wanted, diplomatic relations between Earth and Vulcan wouldn't have been improved. On the whole Kirk accomplished much (in an apparent no-win situation).

If you ask me, in ST IV we should find out that everything we saw in ST III was an hallucination (as in "The Glass Menagerie") produced by Spock/Genesis just so everyone would leave him/it alone. Maybe Nimoy can get it right the next time. -- Byron Howes UNC - Chapel Hill ({decvax, akgua}!mcnc!unc!howes)
