Analog magazine is starting an interesting contest this month.
The "Alternate View" column this issue was a speculation on the
existence of other universes (all universes are bubbles in N-space,
formed at the instant of the big bang, separated by an ocean of H-space).
The author of the piece, John G. Cramer, was talking about the concept
with Gene Wolfe, who suggested that if there are other universes,
calling ours "the universe" is misleading : it ought to have a name.
I now quote from the magazine :
So, in order to correct this Name deficiency, I hereby announce
the 1984 Analog _Name_The_Universe_Competition_ ! The winner will
receive a free one year subscription to this magazine and will,
in addition, achieve the true immortality of having chosen the
proper name of an important natural object, in this case the
Universe in which we live. Send your entries (one per letter
please) to me care of Analog, 380 Lexington Avenue, New York, NY
10017. Include your name and address, your suggestion for the Name
of the Universe, and a brief statement of why you feel the Name is
appropriate. The winning Name and the name of the winner will
be announced in a later Alternate View column (probably in early
1985).
--John G. Cramer, "The Alternate View", Analog September 1984
How about it folks? Any takers? Then again why name anything that
won't come when you call it...
