According to the Pini's (via the Elfquest Fanclub Newsletter), Nevana wanted to do (some portion approaching the whole of) the film in live action, which the Pini's found repugnant to say the least. In addition, the Pini's claim that Nirvana was reluctant to revert the rights and only threats of legal action goaded them into doing the right thing. Perry
