Two Things:

1) Mack Reynolds died about a year and a half ago, right before Boskone '83
(Washington's Birthday Weekend) at which he was to be the GoH.  It was 
suggested that the traditional Dead Dog party at the con's end should
be renamed the Dead Guest of Honor party....

2) The story that came through the German-English language barrier sounds
like one of Pohl's Gateway novels (the second one?).  I think it was called
"Into the Blue Event Horizon" or somesuch. [My grandmother once told us how
she liked the "cold pumpkin soup" at a Chinese restaurant.  Baffled, we 
eventually found out that she meant "wintermelon soup".  Oh well.]
