As a veteran of several SF-type conventions, I would have to agree that there is a much higher percentage of overweight people at these conventions than in the general public. I'm not making a social statement, just stating a fact. keith silver !genrad!teddy!khs (Beam me up Scottie, there's no intelligent life down here!)

I'm not making a social > statement, just stating a fact. I have to disagree with this statement. As a veteran of serveral SF-type conventions (when is an SF-type convention not an SF convention?) I have to say that I don't believe the percentages are significantly different. What IS different is that the overweight people don't seem to feel like they have to hide in corners or feel like they are left out. SF conventions have a high amount of cameraderie and social acceptance that the people in the 'real' world could learn a lot from. Overweight (actually, you replace that word with just about any stereotype-- jew, black, handicapped, woman, Warlock) people are everywhere-- the people at SF cons have figured out how to make them feel at home and less self-concious. I certainly hope that doesn't change... chuq -- From the spotlight of the center ring: Chuqles Von Rospach {amd,decwrl,fortune,hplabs,ihnp4}!nsc!chuqui nsc!chuqui@decwrl.ARPA Never force anyone to do anything for you 'in the name of love.'
