[misc.consumers] Building My own Box

deen@police.rutgers.edu (Cinnamon Raisin) (07/18/90)

	I'm looking to put together my own box, probably an XT or 286.

	I am on a really limited budget (~$700), so an XT might just
	be the ticket, but the system I build must be really
	upgradable. In the end I want to put a 386/33 or i486
	motherboard in the box, I just don't have the cash available
	right now.

	I already have a Display setup (NEC Multisync 2, Paradise
	VGA-16), a modem (2400mnp).

	My questions are:

		1) What motherboards should I stay away from?
			{ Incompatibilities, junk...}

		2) What Hard Drives should I stay away from?
			{ A salesperson tried to sell me on
			  IDE drives, but recent articles tell
			  me otherwise.}
			I am looking at the Seagate st251-1,
			If I get an XT motherboard, what troubles
			will I have when I upgrade?

		3) Can an XT motherboard handle a 250 watt power
			 supply? The thinking is I don't want
			 to buy another power supply when I upgrade.
			 If not, looks like I'm buyin a 286.

	In general, can anyone relate experiences that may be helpful.
