[sci.med] Ibuprofen and aspirin/acetaminophen combination dangerous?

spear@ihlpf.UUCP (Spearman) (10/14/86)

#># Both Advil and Nuprin ibuprofen packages have the following
#># statement in the warnings section:
#># "Although ibuprofen is indicated for the same conditions as aspirin
#># and acetaminophen, it should not be taken with them except under a
#># doctor's direction."
#># There is obviously not an absolute contraindication since the combination
#># could be used under the direction of a physician. What would be the reason
#># for the above warning?

Using ibuprofen with either aspirin or alcohol can cause moderate
stomach upset. My wife did not read the package when taking
the prescription version Motrin and took some aspirin - she was
quite sorry for her oversight.

I will probably get flamed again by Craig Werner for saying this,
but I personally have a bad reaction to ibuprofen. Stomach
pains without taking any aspirin, and psychological reactions.
Needless to say I don't use it anymore.

I can't imagine Craig or anyone else flaming someone reporting an
adverse idiosyncratic reaction to a drug. What you describe is not
particularly unusual, and you are obviously doing the right thing by
avoiding it.

The combination of Ibuprofen and aspirin is not dangerous. However, as
indicated in the PDR, such a combination can reduce the efficacy of both
medications. Thus it is not recommended.

Now why should I flame anybody for having an adverse drug interaction.
Any given drug will cause adverse effects in a certain number of people, and
ALL drugs will cause adverse effects if the dosage is made large enough. It
happens and that's just pharmacolology. Why should I mind? Why bother to
bring up my name in this in the first place?
