The first episode was titled "The Cage", NOT "The Menagerie". Among
the things that the networks didnt like were a female second-in-command and
an alien. Roddenberry then got private funding and made "Where No Man Has Gone
Before". The actor who played Pike was busy, so Shatner was given the part.
Roddenberry wanted an alien, so Spock was kept (and Nimoy in the role). Gary
Lockwood was given a part because the networks liked him.

Roddenberry, not one to waste anything, later made "The Menagerie" by
intercutting it with pieces from "The Cage". Quite a few years later he
realized that the only color negative was cut up for use in "The Menagerie",
so all that is left is black and white. And no, it doesnt seem to matter
much to the story.
