[sci.med] RFI: Computer Representation of Chemical Structures

cjl@ecsvax.uncecs.edu (Charles Lord) (07/23/88)

I am looking for sources of information on the computer represen-
tation of chemical structures. I understand that the "traditional"
method of presenting a structure (I am NOT a chemist) is a hand
drawn diagram with typed or lettered symbols for each atom/basic
structure. I have been approached by the NCI for possible help
with the scanning and interpretation of typed or printed structures
by a computer-based system. My questions to the Net:

1) Any of you doing anything like this already?
2) Is there a standardized (or accepted) form of representing
chemical structures in a computer database?
3) Can any of you point me to a [semi]complete list of the new
chemical structure software packages? I have seen a few so far.
4) Can any of you point me to any good bibliographies in the above
   topics?

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
