I have read that "five to ten per cent of the population have deficiencies in DNA repair mechanisms which make them especially sensitive to radiation damage"... How does one know whether one is carrying repair mechanism deficienies? Is it correlated with any other traits observable to the naked eye or on simple testing? Would such a person be well advised to avoid other carcinogens, such as smoking, sunlight, certain chemicals, etc? Perhaps someone would point me to their favourite book that covers such issues. Any information gratefully received. If to me, I will summarize on the net. The book is: Jones RR, Southwood RR (1987) The Biological Effects of Low-Level Exposure to Ionizing Radiation.
