------------

Let's here it for CFNY!! I've listened to it for the past 6 years, and
still consider it to be one of the best stations around. Back in the
old days, when it was housed in David Marsden's house with a station
motto of "CFNY, the pie in the sky", its style was VERY esoteric, even
somewhat baroque. And who could forget Brad McNally's 'Eclectic Spirit'
show Sunday's at ten, an amalgam of moods and music geared to relax and
stimulate the mind. That show used to be preceded with a warning that
the content of the program could prove distracting and dangerous
if you were doing something which required concentration (such as driving),
and were advised NOT to listen!

Of course, those days are gone, and CFNY has become popularized and
commercialized through the years, while still striving to maintain its
integrity. Among some of its desirable traits (aside from those already
mentioned):

	1) weekends are always special. Every Saturday is either an
all request day, all Canadian, all British, 7 and 12 inch
group, or some other theme. Every Sunday has a special
format, beginning with Classical music from 6-9, followed
by Sunday Almanac (a discussion of current events),
the PQ special (highlighting the music of Quebec),
Twilight Jazz, Import show (overseas imports only),
interviews with groups, Rock In a Hard Place (Christian
rock, hosted by Skip Prokof, former drummer with Lighthouse)

	2) Various special features through the week:

	   - Monday night blues, 11-12
	   - Tuesday night reggae, 11-12
	   - Thursday night live, 11-12, featuring bands recorded locally
by CFNY, such as Orchestral Manoeuvres, Joan Armitrading,
	     Flock of Seagulls, Magazine, etc.

	3) The U-Know awards, originally a mock-up of the Canadian
Juno awards, now becoming a respectable award show in its
own right. The voting for the awards is done entirely by the
the listeners, by ballot, as opposed to the Juno's which
	   are done by record sales.

	4) Pete and Geetz, the morning funnymen were reunited by CFNY.
Still the best way to start the day.

I recently graduated in Math from UoWaterloo, and am working for a year
in LA. I haven't found anything like CFNY down here, and doubt that
I will. Most of the FM stations down here sound like glorified AM stations,
with few exceptions. One thing I'm looking forward to on my return to
Toronto next year is listening to CFNY again, and some good Canadian
talent, like Bruce Cockburn, Jane Siberry, etc. For now, my record
collection will have to do ...

Out here in S.F. I listen to 3 college stations, KALX from Berkeley,
KFJC from Los Altos Hills, and KUSF in SF. A problem is that sometimes
I'll hear a song I like and I'll never hear it again on that station
because they keep playing new songs. And sometimes I never hear who the
artist was or what the name of the song was. On those occasions when I
do get both (name and artist) and head for my record store I can't find
the record and no one at the store has ever heard of it. Some songs
I've tried to track down are:

	"My Boyfriend" by the Cucumbers
"I'm Surfing on Heroin" by the Forgotten Rebels
"Terrorists Love Tourists" by Felix Culpa
