[sci.crypt] What's a "Harris"?

outer@utcsri.UUCP (Richard Outerbridge) (03/27/87)

Has anyone heard of the "Harris" encryption chip? The salesman for a vendor
of DES boards for the IBM PC called me up about his exciting new product, and
I asked him about the impact of DES decertification. No problem - they're
already working on substituting the "Harris" chip for the DES chip they use
now. He didn't know very much - like the DES but better, like the DES but
this time the U.S. will exercise tighter controls over who gets the chips -
but talked as though the device were already in production. What is it?

"Harris" is actually the name of an organization who is under the CCEP
program developing encryption chips. The branch that is doing this work
is Harris Semiconductor in Florida (Melbourne?). I had received some
literature at a recent DC show about their HS3447 Cypher1 chip, but cannot
recall if this was DES based, or used the high-grade encryption algorithm.
I do know they are currently under the CCEP program, but couldn't tell you
whether or not those chips are available yet.
