misc.misc is the nearest thing we now have to the old net.general. That could be bad, but misc.misc is ridiculous. PLEASE try and find a more sensible group before you post. There's a list of them posted out monthly, and if you don't have that read your system's active file (more /usr/lib/news/active should work) or (if in rn) just use the L command to remind yourself of the group names. Recent examples of mis- postings include stuff on 78rpm records which should be in a rec.music group (yes, we do get these in Europe), something on taxes which should be in a misc.taxes AND have a usa distribution (tax systems are very different in each country so world distribution is pointless), and postings on conferences which should go to mod.conferences or comp.org.usenix or .... almost anywhere but misc.misc. I'd like to direct followups to misc.followup, but as there isn't one I've chosen news.misc (as this discussion is about use of news). But I hope you will all just read and note this without feeling you have to post a reply at all. While writing this I've had to check up a few group names myself. rn uses vi to compose postings (unless you set an alternative): it is very easy to type :shell then have a quick look at active or .newsrc or whatever then ^D to go back to exactly where you were. P.S. If any of you object to my use of capital letters above then pretend they are not there, or mail me to complain, or if you really think everyone else wants to know about it, post to sci.lang. But not to misc.misc. -- Regards, David Wright STL, London Road, Harlow, Essex CM17 9NA, U.K. dww@stl.stc.co.uk <or> ...seismo!mcvax!ukc!stl!dww <or> PSI%234237100122::DWW
