[misc.misc] Neuronic Disturbance

kunciov@artecon.UUCP (10/09/87)

I love getting junk mail, unlike many people. My name, in a variety
of fractured forms has appeared on mailing lists for the usual catalogues,
seed companies, camping and fishing suppliers, realtors, insurance men, and
that ilk, but every once in awhile, I get mail that makes me wonder how
I got on the list, how the list got to the people who sent me the mail,
and whether my wife and dog and I are in danger of being brutally raped,
burnt with cigarettes in private places, and quartered before our bodies are
spread over east county. You know, soldier of fortune baloney, Aunt Martha's
Lace Emporium, Healthy Candies made from Salmon. Well, I got an item
yesterday. I suppose I got it because in some small way I have interested
myself in arcana and leave my intelligence open for the experience of life.
What really happened is that I probably bought a book on the tarot sometime
and those folks thought they had a chain sale.

Two fliers, stapled at the top, on electric green and yellow paper, from
a place from AMOK (look it up). Here's some of the copy:

AMOK (3900 Sunset Blvd. at 1067 N. Hyperion Ave. in Silverlake) (I don't even
know where Silverlake is) presents on Sunday, October 18 from 2:30 to 6PM
Timothy (I don't know where I put my mind) Leary and Robert Anton
Wilson signing their BOOKS-SOFTWARE (Apple and MS-DOS) and CASSETTES at a
Neuronic Discordance!!!!!! See you there.

On second thought, I think I'll be in King's Canyon that weekend. Let me know
how it was you pain hackers and samizdat freaks.

Have a nice weekend.

The Silverlake District of Los Angeles (CA) has been noted for its
persistent collection of weirdos and wackos since Spanish times -- it is
conjectured that it is the site of an Indian graveyard, and is thus haunted
and cursed. AMOK appears to be a head shop/libertarian bookstore/wacko
emporium -- I wouldn't be surprised to find Antero Alli hanging around in the
woodwork there . . .
Wilson & Shea's "Illuminatus Trilogy", I think, is one of the sources
for cyberpunk -- or at least the paranoid conspiracy themes therein.
