[misc.misc] Doug Gwyn shows his stuff?

arrom@aplcen.apl.jhu.edu (Ken Arromdee) (03/16/89)

First, your clumsy attempt to put gwyn@brl in the followup-to line doesn't
work. Followup-to is where followups get posted to, not the person
who gets replied to when a reply is made by mail.

>Followup articles are running 3 in favor and 1 (yours)
>against.

This figure is skewed. I posted an "anti" crossposting. However, I posted
it to the proper newsgroups, omitting comp.lang.c and comp.unix.questions.

Of particular interest in this case is that (1) about 5% of
>the mail I have received has mentioned the cross posting in a negative
>way, (2) no one else has felt it necessary to swear, and (3) you are
>the only person who has felt the need to demonstrate the superiority of
>his vocabulary and logic in a public, followup posting.

False.

>> Now the utterly predictable flood of follow-ups is reducing the utility
>> of these newsgroups.
>Let's see, "flood" in this case would seem to imply an overwhelming
>wave of articles. I see a total of 5 messages related to my posting
>in each of lang.c and unix.questions, and all 5 are cross posted.

Why didn't you check misc.misc?

>> You let your preoccupation with your personal problems ...
>If you had read the article, you would know that the main thrust of it

We know what the main thrust of it is. The trouble is that it's not an
appropriate subject for comp.lang.c or comp.unix.questions no matter
_how_ important it is and no matter _how_ many people will benefit from
it.

>.... The majority of the
>people who have emailed me and mentioned it at all have agreed with the
>intent and suggested that I ignore the "utterly predictable flames"
>from people like you.

Gee, you think a self selecting sample in this case is going to give you
an accurate picture of whether most people agree or not?

Suppose I were to post an article similar to yours, but in addition say
that non-fundies get sent to Hell and that thus non-fundies should convert
and insure their parents convert as well to prevent such an awful occurrence.
Would this be right?

Would it be more right if a lot of people wrote in to agree?

What's the difference between this and what you did, except that what you
want people to think about is more acceptable than "consider: if you don't
get your parents to convert they will eventually go straight to Hell"?
