[misc.misc] DECMATE III info wanted

iwood@uvicctr.UVic.ca.UUCP (iwood) (11/08/89)

This is a general plea for help.

**** HELP ****

A friend of mine has acquired two (2) Digital Equipment DEC-MATE III
MS-DOS personal computers. All he got in the deal was the computer
units, power cords, and one disk with what we hope is a version of
DOS, which will run the things. What he didn't get was keyboards,
monitors, monitor cables, documentation. The disk is not in standard
DOS format, but we managed to get some copies of it made with a COPYIIPC
board. DEC does not acknowledge that such a system was ever made.
(Their way of avoiding support of a product which was a merchandising
failure.)

If there is anyone out there with experience or information that they are
willing to provide, please send me mail.

Thanks ever so much.

I tried to respond directly to the poster, but could not get through.
Anyway, this may be of some interest to the net:

Ian,

The DECmate III is NOT an MS-DOS computer. It is based upon the PDP-8
processor and runs Digital's proprietary O/S called WPS-8 or O/S 8. It
*may* have a CP/M board in it (it was an option). The machine is primarily
a word processor and runs WPS.

I believe that it is STILL made. Call 1-800-DIGITAL and ask for a
DECDirect Catalog and an SPD (Software Product Description) on WPS. If
Digital has discontinued this, look in any copy of the DEC Professional,
Digital News, or Digital Review magazines for ads from DEC resellers (in
back of mags). They should be able to get you the right stuff to make it
work. Good luck.

George
