Well, since I couldn't find an appropriate newsgroup - here goes: I have to ship a computer (read 3 boxes - monitor + keybooard + system) from San Fransisco to Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. My problem is that I have to take it through customs myself, i.e. I cannot use a customs broker. Question: Does there exist a shipping firm (not overnight delivery) that has a depot in either Niagara Falls (US) or Buffalo and lets you pick it up yourself from there? (I called UPS, but they only ship directly to persons, and I don't know anybody close enough in the States) Alternatively, is there a firm that ships stuff to your local customs instead of directly at the border? (No, UPS doesn't do this) Any reply would be most bodacious -- The ultimate proof: % ar m God ar: God does not exist

Why? Just let the couriers do it for you. They charge a reasonable fee, something like $10-$15 and it saves a lot of hassles. >Question: >Does there exist a shipping firm (not overnight delivery) that has a depot >in either Niagara Falls (US) or Buffalo and lets you pick it up yourself from >there? >(I called UPS, but they only ship directly to persons, and I don't know >anybody close enough in the States) I've shipped complete computers up from the US via UPS and it wasn't much of a hassle. If you ship it surface it will enter Canada via Windsor where it will get stopped by the UPS brokers there. They will then contact you by phone regarding the duty & taxes owing. Once you agree to pay the duty and tax they will deliver it to the Canadian destination where you will have to pay upon delivery. -- Managing a software development team | Mark Dapoz is a lot like being on the psychiatric | mdapoz%hybrid@cs.toronto.edu ward. -Mitch Kapor, San Jose Mercury | mdapoz@torvm3.iinus1.ibm.com

The reason has to do with customs. Mail is treated as a personal shipment while couriers are classified as comercial. This means that Canada Post will broker and forward a shipment as part of the cost of the postage putting a bill on the package for you to return with a payment. Due to regulations, UPS, Fedex, etc have this done by a brokering/forwarding service and you have to get the shipment cleared through customs personally. 18 chips once cost me $60.00 ***extra*** (30 dollar freight forwarding fee as Fedex did not then deliver to St. John's and 30 dollars brokerage fee). As bad as the post office is, it ain't that bad yet. John Garland jgarland@mun bitnet jgarland@kean.ucs.mun.ca internet

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but I think that as of Jan 1, 1991 there is no further duty on computer products manufactured in the U.S. due to the Free Trade Agreement. The only thing to be paid at the border is 7% GST. Ajai

I used UPS for under 50 pounds and it arrived in very short order. Cost was @$40. USD. Ken -- PATH= Second star to the right, {...Ken Trant...} and straight on till morning National SemiConductor, 1135 Kern Ave. M/S 7C-266; Sunnyvale, CA 94086 Uucp: ...{pyramid,sun,amdahl,apple}!nsc!ken
