[net.sf-lovers] V and other SF on TV

I watch "V" too, but I think it's pretty poor. It's basically a soap
opera. Like a lot of American TV, it preaches too much.

Star Trek suffered from that too, but at least it was produced by
people who had a love of science fiction. If you remember what was
going on in the late 60's, it is surprising how propagandistic is was.
A lot of episodes put down the youth culture of that time and the
women's movement. There was even one horrible show that ended with
Kirk reading the US constitution to a room full of savages after they
had finally killed the last commie on their planet. Complete with the
stars and stripes waving in the background!

"Street Hawk" looks bad. It stars Rex Smith, a beautiful "teen idol"
that the big record companies grew in a nutrient vat somewhere. I
don't think he has ever been popular, but he is always being promoted
by Big Money.

To tell you the truth, the only TV Sci-Fi series I enjoy is Dr. Who.
But, that is another newsgroup. Ciao.

I agree that the episode you refer to (The title escapes me at
this moment) is preachy BUT-

Kirk's reading of the Constitution is followed by the line
"These words must apply to all, Yangs AND Coms or they mean
nothing" or some such line. If the preaching is at least not too
parochial it isn't that bad!

I, too enjoy the Doctor very much, even though he preaches a
bit as well.
