A persistent rumor informs me that in the original preview showings of Dune the film was actually 3.75 hours long and has since been cut back to 2.5. Some people claim to have actually seen (or know someone who's seen) the 3.75 hour version. I haven't seen either version and have no idea what's been cut, if anything. An article I read by Gene Siskel confirms that much of the original footage was not used, although I don't recall if he gave exact figures as to the amount which was dropped.
