I am looking for a Unix engine for my personal use. I don't know whether this sort of thing is available at anywhere near what I can afford, but it may be worth asking. While I am specific about the software (4.2BSD), I become much less choosy about the hardware. In particular, I do not care whether the systems you suggest are new or used, from large companies or small, current state-of-the-art or last year's technology. If you are a manufacturer trying to dump the last of yesteryear's machines, I would be quite willing to take one of them off your hands. The details follow. If you know of anything that may be suitable, please let me know. Thank you for your assistance. Overview: A machine to be used as a development engine, primarily in the areas of operating system research, communications, and compiler design. Essentially only one user, but heavy duty applications. CPU: 680x0 (preferred) NS320xx or 80[23]86 1-4 megabytes of memory Some form of memory protection system is required. A VM scheme would be greatly preferred. A VMEbus is preferred, but Multibus is OK also. IO: Several serial ports are required for modems, printers, and user terminals. Bit-mapped graphics is not required. Ethernet a plus, but not required. Mass Storage: Disk storage 70 megabytes or more. Access time < 40 ms. A SCSI interface is preferred. Tape backup of some form. Cartridge tape is sufficient, but a slow 9-track wins over a faster cartridge. Floppy disk is not required. If provided, it should be capable of exchanging data with the IBM PC world. Software: UNIX is REQUIRED! No Substitutes! (Xenix and company may leave now.) 4.2/2.9BSD is strongly preferred, but AT&T SysVr2 will be (grudgingly) accepted.
