I just received my first Commodore 64 and would like to get a disk drive for it. My brother has a C-64C with a 1541 drive. I want the drive to be 100% compatible with my brothers so that we can exchange 5 1/4 inch floppy disks and be assured that they will work on my machine and vice versa. I have heard that there are two similiar types of disk drives, 1541 and 1541C. What are the differences? Can I use a 1541C and still be 100% compatible with a 1541??? Does any one in the local (Naperville, Lisle, Illinois) area have a 1541 disk drive in good working condition that they are willing to sell at a reasonable price ? -- ....................................... As far as I know, the only differences between the 1541 and the 1541C are the casing, and the 1541C has some fixes to the ROM, like the save-with-replace bug.. A friend of mine (in Maine) is selling his entire system for $150 (c64, 1541, volksmodem, and misc software)..perhaps I can convince him to sell the 1541 alone, if you're interested.. There is NO difference between the 1541 & 1541C drive Except for cosmetic apperance. The DOS is the same!!! As is the same for the c64 and the 64C. UUCP: {ihnp4!scgvaxd!cadovax, <backbone>}!gryphon!pnet02!steve1 INET: steve1@pnet02.cts.com

I have heard that Speed-DOS(+) can't be used with the 1541C drive. So there MUST be some difference between the 1541 and the 1541C. -- Michael Verheij (using Netnews) USENET: vrh@mh.nl via European backbone (mcvax).
