[misc.wanted] IBM or MacCOBOL, anyone?

petti@spock.UUCP (Jeffrey Pettiross) (04/01/88)

Does anyone know of a good Macintosh or IBM PC compatible COBOL
compiler/interpreter out there?

I doubt many other people are interested in this, so mail to me directly...

Thanks,

The best PC COBOL I have found so far is Micro Focus COBOL. I think it is
the most "professional" anyway. It has an impressive toolset, and will accept
various COBOL variants, including IBM mainframe COBOL, RM COBOL, Microsoft
COBOL, an dprobably a few more, in addition to standard COBOL 78. The only
drawback is the price ... I have seen it from the Programmer's Shop for a
little over $700, (this is for their COBOL/2 compiler). They have a personal
COBOL for $119 (again from the Programmer's Shop). Both have a source debugger
(ANIMATOR) which is real slick. In fact, COBOL/2 is apparantly going to be
the "standard" COBOL sold by IBM for their PS series (so I have heard).

The prices you may want to double check as these figures are kind of old.
The Programemr's Shop number is 800-421-8006 [I have found them to be real
helpful if you need to know something like what products are available to do
such and such]. Also, Micro Focus's number is 415-856-4161. Their prices
of course, will always be higher than the prices at the discount shops,
but you canget it from them sooner (the discounts shops will call Micro Focus
when they get your order, and have MF send them a copy of it which they will
then send to you - I haven't found many that keep stuff in stock).

I do not have any connection with PS or MF, other than having dealt with them
at one point or another.
